wonderful storyThis was a page turner and a heart stopper when an accident occurs. I laughed and worried about the hero surviving.

Jazz State of Indiana
Published in Paperback by Duncan P Schiedt (June, 1977)
Average review score:

The Jazz State of IndianaDuncan Schiedt's pioneering effort to chronicle Indiana's contribution to jazz is now in it's second printing. He more than complements the meagre information about Indiana and jazz which was previously relegated to brief references to the Wolverines at the Casino Gardens and that Bix Beiderbecke and Frank Trumbauer joined Whiteman there. Jazz great Eddie Condon from Goodland, Indiana is only one of many musicians, Hoosier and otherwise who played in Indianapolis and/or recorded at the famous Gennett studios in Richmond, Indiana. The list of names are a veritable "Who's Who" in jazz. Sheidt knows his subject matter well. The book is loaded with photographs, many of which are Duncan's. After all he made a living for years as a photographer. "The Jazz State of Indiana" is a gem and a must-buy for any devotee of jazz.

Jeffersonville (Images of America: Indiana)
Published in Paperback by Arcadia (November, 2002)
Average review score:

Fond MemoriesAs a lifelong resident of Jeffersonville, I loved reading and looking at the old black and white photos in this book. It is neatly formatted and well researched. I'm not old enough to remember the '37 flood, but have heard plenty of stories about it. I've known Scotts, Pfaus, and Coots my entire life. This book is a real plus for our community!

Kierkegaard in Golden Age Denmark (Indiana Series in the Philosophy of Religion)
Published in Hardcover by Indiana University Press (November, 1900)
Average review score:

Kierkegaard in contextKirmmse's book is an attempt to place Kierkegaard in the Politcal, social and religious context of early 19th century Danish Society. There are chapters on the major characters constantly referred to in SK's book. There are chapters on Gruntvig, Martinsen, Heiberg and, of course, Mynster. The major emphasis in the his discussion of SK, himself is: why was Concluding Unscientific Postscript not his last book as he planned it to be? The second half of the book is a wonderful exploration of the "second authorship." a great read.

Lena: Murder in Southern Indiana
Published in Hardcover by Mayhaven Pub (01 February, 2002)
Average review score:

Lena Murder In Southern IndianaThis book was really hard for me to read but it was also the best. This book is about my best friend that was murdered and the horrible things her parents went through. Could you imagine following an ambulance to your home not knowing what was going on. Only to find out that some sick person had come in your home and killed you 14 year old daughter. You have got to know that family that this tragity happened to. They were a very close and loving family. Lena was to happiest person to be around and you could never be in a bad mood around her, all she had to do was smile. This book starts from a couple of days before Lena was killed and ends several months after she was buried. It talks about Gary and Christine (Lena's parents) going to pick out Lena's casket, the day the tragety happened, having to move out of their home after living there for 17 years, the sleepless nights the long lonely days. This book is straight from Christine's heart. I will tell you what she told me, "This book is by far sugar coated." Lena's sister Alicia is the one who found Lena first. This book contains court hearings of the killer which was her next door neighbor she had grew up with. I recommend this book to everyone. It really shows how life could be over before you expect it to be.

The Little 500: The Story of the World's Greatest College Weekend
Published in Hardcover by Indiana University Press (October, 1999)
Average review score:

Great Book! This book is ideal for anyone who is interested in the Little 500--an IU Student, a Little 500 rider, an IUSF member, or a curious fan. Schwarb does an amazing job going through the history of the humble beginnings of race all the way through the 1990's--detailing all of the people behind the events, the races, the up's and down's, and the emotion that made Little 5 what it is today. The Appendix includes a list of everyone who ever rode in "The Race," which makes this a great gift to former riders. Many people often ask, "What is Little 500?" This book answers that question and many more...

A Little Dab of Color
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (October, 1980)
Average review score:

A Little Dab Of ColorA Little Dab Of Color is a charming book about two very normal boys growing up on a farm in Indiana. No matter what stunts the boys pull, their Grandmother is always there to bail them out. (And possibly give them a whippin' in the mean time!) Through the book William Bruce Bell promotes family ties and togetherness while relating tales a little to authentic to be entirely fabricated! I would enthuesiasticly recommend this book for boys or girls 3rd grade or up (give or take).

Marjorie Main : Rural Documentary Poetry
Published in Paperback by Mesa Verde Press (10 December, 1999)
Average review score:

Back Home Again in Indiana.....Having spent some time on a farm outside Muncie, Indiana myself, I was drawn into his stories immediately. I could taste that same well water in the rusted cup; I could see that old cottonwood tree and John would have eaten my mother's pie crusts! His life experiences on the farm are both funny and heart wrenching.....at times I didn't know whether to laugh or cry or both. The feelings of not ever measuring up to the people who lived in the town were the most poignant for me.....that he felt that made me sad because I never felt that way. John's poems are a true slice of life for those of us who grew up in the rural midwest.....something I'll treasure and pass along to my children.
